The Hardest Virtue

Patience is a virtue. Ever heard that? I have. And I hate it. Mostly because I struggle with it. I was praying about patience in my life this morning and started thinking about this simple statement. Patience is a virtue. We all know what patience is. It is the capacity, habit, or act of.....

I was up in Rockford Illinois last week. I lived there for a few years during high school and was brought up to speak to their youth group. I love going there. Always good to do ministry.....

Playing The Game

Politics are a hot topic right now. Everyday it seems there is a new war being waged somewhere on something. Whether its the people of Egypt fighting their government, or the people of Wisconsin fighting ours. There has also been a large movement in America called the Tea Party over the last couple years. Now hear me on this....this post is not to talk about my opinions on party or issues. Rather its about how this applies to Christians, and more specifically, Christians in leadership (whatever that leadership is).

The Tea Party got its name from the Boston Tea Party. It was when a group of colonist in early America demonstrated by taking tea out of British ships and dumped it in the harbor due to the British taxing tea in 1773. The Tea Party is a group of people that, without a main leader, have joined together to take down politics as normal. Their mantra as I see it is: If you are the kind of person that wants the job.....then we don't want you having it. They want to get rid of the games, and get people to just help make our government work. Now this isn't what always happens, but as far as I can tell, this seems to be their mantra.

As far as I see, there is a big correlation between politics, and ministry these days. I call it playing the game. There are people that will always do it their own way, no matter what others think. There are others that are always striving for something more, something bigger. Still there are others that just don't want things to change. But there is a movement that has happened in the last couple years. Some people try and attach this movement with the millennial's, or the emergent church. But that really is inaccurate. Because even in those areas, there is just as much game playing. No, this movement doesn't have a name, or a face. It's only leader is Christ. It's a group of ministers that realize doing the work of Christ has nothing to do with our success, and only the success of Christ in the people. They are, for lack of a better term.....Tea Party Christians. They are people not looking to make a name for themselves, but rather make a name for Jesus in our planet. They don't play games. And I want to be one of them.

If I am wrong on any of the political points I made.....who cares. Don't make a string of comments that turn this post into politics and arguing about who is right and who isn't. Because thats not what this post is about. It's about people understanding, that sometimes the best way to fight the enemy is try a new game plan. To get someone who wants to change the world, not work their way up the ministry food chain. Trying to be bigger and better is the way the world works, we know that. But that isn't the way we are supposed to be.

If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. John 15:19 NIV

Grow where you are planted. And if you aren't planted yet, then you better plant yourself before you start shouting at others. Changing the world for Christ is a grassroots campaign and you are on the front lines. God has a plan for all of us right here, right now. It's not about waiting till you are "where you are supposed to be".

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV

Quite frankly, most people that want the job shouldn't have it. And the greatest ministers in history didn't ask to be. They just grew where they were and did what God asked. Fight the power, go against the current, and change the world. Don't play the game.

Humbled by the Neighbors

This has been a great week. Sarah and I are not huge Valentines people, but I must say, it was a great holiday for us this year. This is our first Valentines being married. We didn't give each other big gifts or anything, but we did have the best date night ever. We went to a place in Tampa called Bern's Steakhouse. Insanely good. I have never been there. Have heard about it for years, but was blown away. Especially by the decor. This place is a straight up haunted house. Was the most expensive, nicest date we have ever had. Not that money is important in matters of the heart, but we don't do a lot of nice dates, and it was awesome. I love her with all my heart, and it was so great to be able to spoil my babydoll.
This past weekend, I spoke at the West Florida Youth Convention. It was an awesome experience. This is my second year being with them up there. We were in Tallahassee with over 600 students. Corey Evans band led worship. I actually went to high school with Corey, so it was great to be able to catch up with him. I must say, I love going over to the panhandle of Florida. Those students, pastors, and leaders are some of the best in the nation. There is something about an auditorium being jam packed full of teens jumping up and praising God. I loved it.
Finally, something happened this past week that was incredible. On Sunday night before Valentines, Sarah and I were laying on the couch watching Lost (hooked by the way) when the doorbell rang. We generally don't have a lot of people come to our front door that we aren't expecting....especially at 9 pm on Sunday night. So I went to the door, and saw a family. Husband and wife were probably around our age, with two adorable little girls. They were going door to door giving out Valentines gifts to the neighbors. They live across the street from us. Sarah moved into this house in May, and I moved in after the wedding in October, and neither of us had ever met them. They gave us a little box of Valentines candy, introduced themselves, and we talked for a couple of minutes. As they were getting ready to leave, they asked a simple question....."Is there anything we can pray about for you guys?". I was blown away. Here I am, a minister and evangelist, and they are the ones spreading God's love. Not in a mean, or in your face kind of way. I mean, I didn't even know their names. I was humbled. They ended up coming in the house and we talked for about 20 minutes. I felt bad saying what I did for a living, because I had never reached out to even speak to them. At the end of the visit all 6 of us gathered around and held hands and prayed together. It was so awesome. That night God taught me something. Being a minister, and carrying the banner of Christ doesn't stop....ever. I always say that you can change the world right where you are....and God showed me that I hadn't listened to my own advice. I hope that lights a fire under me to do more everywhere I go. Lets change the world....one neighbor at a time.
